Fees, Financing & Insurance
When planning your plastic surgery after weight loss, cost will naturally be an important factor. Most Sacramento weight loss patients need more than one procedure to complete their physical makeover, and the cost can add up.
A Word About Insurance
An unfortunate fact about today's post-weight loss plastic surgery is that the vast majority of procedures aren't covered by insurance. While more companies now cover bariatric surgery, they do so to help their clients regain good health. Most plastic surgery after weight loss is not considered medically necessary.
Occasionally patients are successful in persuading an insurance carrier to cover all or part of a procedure. To have the best chance, visit your primary care physician during your weight loss to document any physical problems you may have. These can include rashes and back/neck pain. You should also compile a record of any remedies you may try and take photos.
Some insurance companies will cover breast reduction surgery for women if the nipple sags at or below the bend in the elbow. Panniculectomy, or removal of redundant lower abdominal skin, may also be covered if the skin sags into the pubic area. Some companies will cover eyelid surgery if a patient's vision is impaired by droopy lids.
If it's your goal to have your insurance company cover some of the cost of your post weight loss plastic surgery, the best word of advice for you is: document. The more hard evidence you have of medical issues, the better your chances.
Ballpark Costs
It's next to impossible to predict exactly what plastic surgery after weight loss will cost before your consultation, but here are some general figures for you to consider. Mid body surgery such as abdominoplasty costs between $8000 and $10,000 for most patients. The more extensive body lift surgery generally costs in the neighborhood of $15,000. Breast and arm surgery, when combined, typically cost about $15,000, and thigh lifts cost around $10,000.
